On Titan, JWST has detected the elusive methyl radical (CH₃), a highly reactive molecule with one carbon atom, three hydrogen atoms, and an unpaired electron that makes it vanish almost instantly by combining with other molecules. This short-lived molecule is the long-sought missing link: it directly connects sunlight-driven methane chemistry in Titan’s atmosphere to the production of ethane, the hazy orange smog, and the liquid hydrocarbon lakes and seas that cover the moon’s surface.
